Samsung TV makes a strange clicking sound
My Samsung TV (52″ LCD) started clicking several times before finally switching on after 30 seconds, this relay clicking gradually got worse each time I turned the set on. ( It turns out that this is quite a common problem with Samsung TV’s of all sizes). The problem seems to start after the TV is a year or two old (normally outside guarantee) and sounds like a relay clicking on and off. Samsung deny there is a design problem, so I thought rather than spend money on an engineer, I would try and fix the problem myself.

I thought the first place to look for a problem like this is in the power supply.
- I unscrewed the back cover of the TV (20 screws)
- Removed the metal cover of the power supply (4 screws)

- I carefully looked over the power supply looking for anything out of the ordinary, low and behold I could see a few capacitors (the cylindrical shaped components) that had raised tops. These raised tops are caused when the capacitor breaks down and forms hydrogen gas, if left, eventually the capacitors will blow, and hopefully the top will split open and release the gas pressure, if not, they may just explode.

I checked out the replacement cost of a new power supply board, I couldn’t find the exact power supply online but this company has ones for smallers TV starting at around £160. So I was guessing it would be around £200 for a new one. Ouch, definately time to DIY.
I decided to replace all the capacitors in the power supply, I guessed if some were bad, then probably Samsung use cheap or poorly designed capacitors and at some point the others would go bad too. and replacing all the capacitors wouldn’t cost much more .
Each Capacitor has 3 important values
- The capacitance measured in μF (micro farads) eg (1000μF)
- Voltage (eg 50V)
- Temperature (eg 105°C)
This particular Power Supply Unit (PSU) has 3 different types.
- 1000μF 105°C at 10V
- 1000μF 105°C at 25V
- 47uF 105°C at 50V
RS Components have a good selection, so I opted to buy from there. It cost about £12 including postage for a 5 pack of each of the capacitors. I took a few photos of the circuit board so I wouldn’t forget what I was doing and set to work.
I re-opened the TV, and completely removed the Power Supply Circuit Board, you need to remove several connectors, again, I took some photos just in case I couldn’t work out where they all went when putting it back together. I made sure the Power Supply didnt have any residual power stored in the capacitors by unplugging the TV (whilst it was turned on) from the plug. This is very important as messing with a power supply even 30 minutes after it has been turned off can still give you a nasty shock.
I then drew a simple diagram marking the polarity of each capacitor. To remove each capacitor takes a little time, you need to heat each pin using a soldering iron and whilst it is still molten pull or wiggle each leg out in turn. I found it easiest when I used the other leg as a pivot and rotate the capacitor around the fixed leg.
Anyway once removed, you I used the de-solder pump to clean up any solder that was clogging up the hole and then I inserted a new capacitor (checking the values again) and making sure the polarity was same as the one I had just removed. turning the board over, I bent the pins a little, soldered the joints, and snipped off any left over wire.


I put the board back in and hey-presto it all worked beautifully. Job took about 2 hours in total and excluding tools £12 for the components and postage.

If you snap off the solder connector on the PCB when doing this replacement, it is worth noting that you can re-attach your component in another place as long as it is electrically equal. The Red Line in the diagram below shows where an existing component was, this component could then be re-soldered into any of the positions marked in green. But in the case of a capacitor which has + positive and – negative legs, you must make sure that the leg is re-attached to the same track, I have marked with a + plus sign which track it must be re-attached too.

After replacing the capacitors a few people are still having problems, it appears that this can be fixed by resetting the EPROM chip (apparently – a simple matter of shorting two of the pins). http://www.tv.quuq.org/forum/index.php?topic=2377

You are not alone, there have been almost 65,000 visits to this page in the last year. The answers to many of the questions people are asking are scattered through the previous comments, Most people with little experience have been successful in fixing their TV’s although for a few, it didn’t work, the symptoms were similar but cause was different. A few of the more recent comments reveal that people are becoming more successful with getting Samsung to repair their TV’s, its definitely worth trying before you launch into a self fix.

Before attempting repairs yourself it is probably worth trying to see if Samsung will repair the TV for you, Samsung seem to now accept (unofficially at least ) that there is a defect in these capacitors, and in an increasing number of cases will send out an engineer to fix them. Skim through the comments below to get more info.. A polite but assertive approach seems to yield best results, remember they are in the wrong and there is plenty of consumer law in most countries covering their liabilites and responsibilities.
If you fail to get Samsung to repair it, 100′s of people have had success with the replacement fix I describe above, a few of the failures are probably due to similar symptoms but a different fault. Again if you are unsure read some of the 100′s of comments below

I have a Samsung LNT4671 that was clicking on and off before it turned on 5 min later. I followed the directions and it was a piece of cake. $5 versus $500 to fix!!
i was playing my ps3 through mine and the picture just went away, and it doesnt come back when i turn it off and on again, it still has the sound i checked all the cords and nothing seems to work any ideas?

Thanks for the info! Just mended my Samsung LE40R73 using four 1000uF capacitors, as all of them were badly deformed, and two had even leaked, leaving black deposit on top of casing!
Makes you think they are not up to the job, but Samsung will obviously dispute this!

JUST AN UPDATE OF MY POSITION.
My TV is now on 24/7 as I know it will not be able to come back on if I switch it off. I am well aware that this is not really acceptable but Samsung and my supplier forces this position.
SAMSUNG say this is a non warranty repair and despite sending a letter to DABS.COM whom I have dealt with successufully for many years it seems it is up to me to provide an engineers report that this is an inherent fault.
I have had no response from DOM on the One Show about the FAULTY GOODS AND SALE OF GOODS ACT 1979 (as amended) as they simply reply that after 6 months the onus is on me to provide proof of an inherant fault and it seems sites like this with loads of proof is not acceptable.It seems there is a serious need for some body to put pressure on these companies.

i told the retailer to call samsung (while i was in the shop)and tell them that i was so confident of my position that i will take the retailer to the small claims court claiming a refund of the FULL cost of the TV as compensation.i cited this and other forums as my evidence of a fault. also that i would make a complaint to trading standards.
get the RETAILER to explain to samsung, that you consider 10volt capacitors on a power supply that outputs more than 10volts is an inherent fault and its on several different models of samsung TVs.get the retailer to further state that your utterly positive that youll be able to convince the judge (in the small claims court)of this.
samsung wont want the retailer to be dragged into court over this matter or get adverse publicity either.
they have to convinced by the retailer that you mean business.
at this point they decided to pay the retailer for the repairs to my TV so they could maintain good will with the retailer.

I have a 40″ Samsumg LCD. Any idea how to get rid of the pink dots that appear from time to time on start up? I have to turn it off then back on which seems to fix the problem but I fear this is only going to get worse!
Hey i also have a Samsung 4671 and its doing the same thing. First it started with 1-3 clicks but now it takes like 2 3 minutes maybe 30-40 clicks to turn on. I initialy changed the caps has noted on here that didnt work then bought a new power board and again that did not work. Sent it to a repair shop as currys diddnt want to know cited that I should of taken their extended warranty. The repair shop gave me a report noting that this is an inherent fault and that the tv is dead. Im now writing to the manager at Currys to state that these tv’s are not fit for purpose it was two years old.
So I just called Samsung for a 3rd time. First call they told me to reset my TV, which actually worked for a day or two. After a week when it got really bad (5-10 minutes to turn on), I called again and they said it was out of their scope and to call a authorized repair shop. They shop told me $5-10 in parts and $200 in labor to repair and if I kept trying to turn on and off I could to damage to the motherboard. Since then I’ve left it on and shopped around and everyone else comes in higher than the Samsung repair shop. I was going to have my buddy, and electrical engineer fix it, but he’s hesitant to mess with my $1200 TV. SO, I called them again today, started the phone call saying my TV is messed up with a problem well know to Samsung that they refuse to fix because of warranty expiration. She immediately told me she’d submit a claim to the “Executive Claims Division” and was confident they’d be able to fix things for me. I guess I’ll see what that callback yields, but I’m definitely going to put up a fight. Seems clear to me that they’re getting more and more calls about this lately and are well aware of the problem and maybe actually thinking about taking care of it themselves as opposed to displacing blame. I’ll keep you all posted about the outcome. They said they’d call back within the next two business days, but most likely in less than 24 hours.

CX had purchased an extended warranty from the dealer as per his notes. In this case his both TV’s need to be repaired by the dealer’s depot , cx will have then to contact dealer and review his extended warranty policy.Samsung can’t do anything about it because both units are OOW and also they covered by extended warranty.I would highly recommend the cx to check on the power in his residential area,because it can’t be a coincidence that the power supply module fail in 2 TV’s at the same time.

Just performed the fix with 4 capacitors from Maplins online. Cost 54p each. Never soldered before but took my time and hey presto! TV now works fine. Hardest bit was removing the duff caps…but a little patience is all thats required.
So, many thanks to this site and the threads. Samsung will be receiving a strongly-worded email!
Whoever the guy is that put up step by step directions on what the problem could be, and how to fix it is a money saver for people like me that never done this before. I thank you so much for showing me how simple it was to do.

@David – Yes it can, using a capacitor with a larger voltage or temperature value should not cause any problems.
(This doesnt apply to the uf (capacitance) value which must be the same)

@David, I should think they will work. Like I said as long as the capacitance is the same, the temp & voltage is the same or greater, and the capacitor is the same type (which is is – electrolytic) they should work, just make sure you get the polarity correct when inserting the new ones.
one last question, are the + and – marked on the board? are the capacitors marked?
@David, I can’t remeber if the polarity is marked on the board, but the capacitors themselves are marked with a negative stripe, just make sure you note which way they are before you remove them, its a good idea to take a few photos.
In my case polarity was marked on the soldering side of the board. Where a capacitor was located there was a circle divided by a line creating two half circles. One of those half circles had slashes in it indicating the negative side of a capacitor. All of my capacitors were marked like this.
My tv LN-T4061F has started clicking for about 5 minutes before it actually turns on. I’m nervous to turn it off all the time like it will never turn back on. I’m going to finally give Samsung a call tomorrow to see what they will do for me. Can’t believe how many people are having the same issue. Keep us posted if anyone hears anything new from Samsung.
My 46inch LCD Samsung will not turn on at all. The clicking noise stays going unless unplugged. I removed the back cover and I can not tell which capacitor is bad. None of them are raised like the pictures show. Is there a way to test which one it is? Also if not, can I replace the whole power board and where would I find this?
@Brian – Based on the 100′s of people who have had this problems and their solution, and even though you can’t identify which capacitors which are at fault. I would recommend changing all the capacitors on the power supply. As it costs so little, its really only a bit of time you are going to lose if it turns out to be wrong. I have posted a couple of pictures to ask another question. I do not know which ones to just start replacing since I can’t tell which is bad. Can you look at this picture and tell me which ones you think you would replace. I am thinking about doing the 4 black ones and two larger blue ones. There are also some smaller black ones. Which ones would you start with? When I order the new parts do I just match up the same numbers and order identical capacitors?

@Brian, I hope if will fix it, but obviously can’t be sure, as I said you have little to lose.
I suggest changing the parts for identical ones. Although others have said that the capacitors Samsung have used had too small a voltage. So perhaps a larger voltage value (say 50V instead of 10V) would be a good idea.
If the part used by Samsung was the wrong one, I guess all that will happen is the component will fail again in a few years.
I heard back from Samsung regarding my request to have them fix the TV even though it was out of warranty. They basically told me that I would need to send them my purchase order along with a diagnostic report from an authorized repair shop before they’d know if they could do anything. Considering most of the repair shops charge a fee to do a diagnostic (about $50 from what I’ve seen) I don’t think I’ll be going that route. The fee gets applied towards repairs if they do in fact repair it, but that would mean I’d have to have faith that Samsung would actually do the repair, which at this point I definitely don’t. So, $50 and a lot of hassle for the possibility of having it fixed or $10 and few hours of my time to definitely get it fixed….think I’ll just do it myself.

Clicking started on my 4061F this week and now only backlite and sound regardless of input/source. RS here I come. I bought two of these for the kids and a 56 DLP Samsung for me. I expected lamp issues with DLP, but never expected I’d be wielding a soldering iron within 2 years of purchase. My 60″ Mitsubishi lasted 21 years without any service! My 46″ Samsung TV just started this problem two days ago. Sounds like it must be very common, as it only took me 5 seconds to find this forum. So this fix is pretty easy? I’m not really comfortable taking apart my TV….
hi chris , my 42 inch plasma samsung has gone now , started clickking etc etc found ur post i was just wondering , would it matter if it was a plasma or Lcd do they stilll work same way ? ive removed the power supplu board ready for change tomo just wanted to make sure that as it s same prob as u have stated the plasma / lcd thing would nt matter

@Wes, as the problem is with the power supply, I should think if the problem is occuring with a plasma tv it will most likely be solved using the same fix as with an LCD tv.

@ Bob Barry : thankyou for your post regarding getting the retailer to ring Samsung directly while in the retailers. This did kind of help, basically Samsung told the retailer that I still had to get an engineer report and based on that report Samsung would decide what the next step would be.
I was not happy with the retailer not really pushing my case so I contacted Samsung directly while in Curry’s. I asked for my problem to be ESCALATED (they actually have a seperate department for this) and threatened to take them to court for a full refund on the basis of the amount of information/evidence I had regarding this manufacturing fault and was told someone would get back to me within 48 hours. Low & behold WITHIN 3 HOURS I had a phone call from Samsung directly (ESCALATIONS) stating that THEY ARE GOING TO PAY THE REPAIR COSTS IN FULL which means I do not pay a penny. I already have a Job Reference Number for Camtronics to repair the TV and they will be picking it up in a few days and repair within 7 days.

I advise anyone with this problem to contact Samsung directly (Samsung = 0845 726 7864), explain your problem and that you have evidence to prove a manufacturing fault ie: 10V capacitors on a power board that outputs more than 10V (I spoke directly to a ‘Camtronics (01462 485947)’ engineer who advised me this is a factory fault because the capacitors run at their full capacity with no room to breath resulting in blowing up.

SAMSUNG: YOUR CUSTOMER RELATIONS/SERVICE IS EXTREMELY POOR!
YOU TRIED TO MAKE YOUR PRODUCT(S) CHEAPLY… AND HAVE BEEN BIT ON THE ARSE!!! SORT YOURSELVES OUT SAMSUNG… AS FROM NOW I WILL NEVER EVER BUY A SAMSUNG PRODUCT AGAIN.
And apparently I learned today that Samsung have very low quality control checks and are known for using cheaper parts when making their products = FACT! A Currys TV sales representative told me this and from now on I will buy either SONY or PANASONIC as they have the HIGHEST QUALITY CONTROL!
BTW – My TV is a 40″ Samsung LCD Model: LE40R73BD
AND IS 3 YEARS OLD!!! AND THEY ARE STILL FIXING IT FOR FREE!
Yesterday, I was able to do this repair successfully by following the instructions. There were two bad capacitors, very easy to spot on the power supply. Being a complete novice, I opted to replace only the obviously bad ones.
I ordered replacements from http://www.mouser.com – the two caps were $.75 each and shipping was $3. Mouser has a great online search function that allows you to match voltage, capacitance, heat rating and physical size. And, I even got to speak with a tech on the phone to confirm a couple of points.
As I said, I have never done a repair of this nature before. It was important to match the polarity of the caps when reinstalling. The circuit board is clearly marked plus and minus, and the caps themselves have a stripe down the negative side, with the positive lead being longer as well.
In spite of the fact that this story had a happy ending, this is definitely a manufacturing defect that should have been addressed by Samsung, since it has occurred in so many units. It’s too bad that Samsung hasn’t seen fit to replace the power supplies free of charge in these tvs, or set up some sort of in-store repair with authorized service centers where customers can get it fixed free or at a greatly reduced price. This is obviously not a hard or expensive repair job.
@ robert: did you replace with the same voltage? if so… you will have the same problem in another 12-18 months fella.
The engineer that is fixing my tv is replacing them with a higher voltage capacitor rated above the specified voltage so they do not blow ever again.

Ive just re hung me 42 ” Plasma bak back up AND low and behold it works again ! Chris u ledgend . Before i couldnt even get it past the clicking, So happy dayz mate Although i have just noticed a slight ringing noise coming from the tv its very quiet but high frequency i looking for a buzzer on all component board s but cudnt find one anywere any idea what this cud be ? thx again for ur help mate as i really havent got the dosh at the minute to pay for new Board

oh it cost me 6 quid for caps and solder from maplins put 16 v 36 v and 63 v caps in replacement for the original 10 25 50s kept the uf and temp same just rasied the volatge to accomodate actual rate the board is running at
